How Social Media Can Make Events Safer

Most if not all of us are using social media either personally, professionally, or both to stay in touch with our families, staff, members, and clients. When using social media tools like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Instagram to stay connected, there are many easy safety and security elements you can incorporate into your social media program to help keep your organization, members, staff, and clients safe.

When hosting an event in a destination that is not their home city, planners and attendees need to know where they can get information that will keep them safe. Suppliers need to learn about these tools as well so they can help their out-of-town customers feel - and be - safer.

Numerous first responders - including police, fire, and emergency managers - as well as public health agencies and non-government organizations (NGOs) are also relying on social media. They are using these tools as we do for the meetings industry – to provide quick, efficient, and cost effective two-way communication with our audiences.

During this presentation, we’ll identify some of these safety and security elements, review how to identify your specific needs and concerns, discuss how best to partner with your suppliers and vendors, and learn how to keep your events and your attendees safer.

Ruth L. Gregg, MPS, CMP, CGMP, has over 18 years of diverse meetings experience working with non-profits, government agencies, and corporate organizations. She has created successful educational and social events for engineers, researchers, military staff, sales staffs, association members, and VIPs. As Manager, Meetings and Events for East West Connection, her duties include creating Emergency Preparedness Plans and coordinating emergency response plans for events taking place throughout the United States and Europe. She completed her intercollege Masters of Professional Studies in Homeland Security from the Pennsylvania State University World Campus in 2012.
